Maidstone Winds asked me to join them and augment the bassoon section for their Christmas concert in St Margaret's Church, Barming. My camera went too!

St Margaret's, Barming is at the end of the second of two lanes which branch off from the A26 Maidstone-Tonbridge road at Barming. It is a small 12th Century Church; and for the Maidstone Winds concert, it was filled to capacity by the band and the audience. As I was there primarily to rehearse and perform in a concert, I didn't have much time for photography, but I did bring my camera into the church between the rehearsal and the performance. It was getting a bit dark by then for outside photography, so you'll have to visit the church's own website by following the Places link at the bottom of this page if you want to see what the exterior looks like. I had brought a couple of prime lenses with me, but decided to stick with the zoom lens that happened to be on the camera and see what the shake reduction facility would let me achieve. I've included some technical data as a tribute to the camera. Here is a view of chancel of the church with five rows of seating for musicians, plus some percussion just in front of the altar. The band literally filled the front of the church! Unfortunately there was scaffolding up, but these things can't be helped. |

I didn't turn the camera on the rear of the church. It consists of a nave area with sight of the chancel and a north aisle with a limited view of the front of the church. There's also a bell tower, which I think contains four bells, but I could have missed counting some of the ropes. Additionally, there's a small upstairs gallery, and congregations are large enough that worshippers use the gallery from time to time. I zoomed in on the altar area of the chancel. There are three small stained glass windows set into the east wall. They have fresco painting in the window arches. Two of the three windows are visible in the next picture, although it was a bit dark outside for much light to be getting through them. The third window is above the wall hanging in the centre of the picture. |
