One summer weekend each year, the staff who run the Woolwich Ferry donate their time; and the ferry's owners donate the use of one of their three boats; and the Woolwich Ferry sails up the Thames to Central London. It's all done as a charitable exercise. In July, 2006, it was the turn of John Burns to have a holiday from regular duty, which is carrying cars between the North Circular and South Circular Roads, and instead make the trip to the Upper Pool.
These pictures were captured using a Pentax *ist DS digital SLR camera.

We found ourselves a spot on the north bank of the Thames from which to watch the Tower Bridge lift which allowed John Burns entry into the Upper Pool. |

John Burns sails into the Upper Pool, decked out in bunting, and carrying a great many excited foot passengers along for the ride. |

The Woolwich Ferry boat is a very manoeuvrable boat and can turn in her own length. Here John Burns can be seen doing pirhouettes in the shadow of London Bridge. |

Two closer views. Note the portaloos visible on the car deck in the left picture. You can also see the bridge of John Burns in that picture. It's located in the centre of the boat above the car deck. (Being the same at both ends, it makes sense to have the bridge in the middle, and having it up high means that it commands a good view and is out of the way of vehicular traffic.) |
