The paddle steamer Waverley has been paying London a visit for about a fortnight at the beginning of autumn for several years and docks at Tower Millennium Pier. This particular visit didn't go down according to plan, though, and goes down as "The time when Tower Bridge didn't lift".
My digital SLR, a Pentax *ist DS, was used to capture these images.

Here was what I wrote on 23rd September, 2005: I was on a photographic expedition after work, and it didn't yield exactly what I was expecting it to. I positioned myself outside the Tower of London to photograph the Tower Bridge lift for Sailing Barge Lady Daphne leaving the Upper Pool and Paddle Steamer Waverley entering it. At the appointed lift time, both vessels were in position on either side of the bridge and the traffic on the bridge was stopped, but then nothing happened! After a while Lady Daphne turned around and went back to City Pier. Waverley hung around hopefully for a while, but eventually she turned around with the aid of her tug and went off to Greenwich. A lot of disgruntled Waverley passengers waiting on Tower Millennium Pier had to be taken to Greenwich to board her!. |

Here is Waverley facing hopefully towards Tower Bridge, where the bascules are remaining firmly in their "down" position. |

Tug Revenge zips around while Waverley waits. Revenge is small enough to fit under Tower Bridge. |

Tug Revenge takes Waverley under tow to swing her round to face back downriver towards Greenwich. |
