HMS Somerset, a Type 23 Frigate in the Royal Navy, spent a few days in London during March 2006, when she was tied up alongside HMS Belfast. My digital SLR, a Pentax *ist DS, was used to record her on the evening when she arrived.

I was feeling a little lazy on the day when HMS Somerset was arriving in London, and decided not to haul my tripod up to town, but to manage with just my beanbag for camera support. I kept the ISO rating high to cut down on exposure times, and got some acceptable (albeit a bit noisy) results. I set a manual white balance.
The first three pictures were taken from near Old Billingsgate Market on the north Thames Path. |

This picture was taken from Tower Bridge. I tried a number of shots from that vantage point, but those taken on the suspension bridge section suffered from the vibrations resulting from vehicles passing over the bridge. This picture was taken from a more solid vantage point: using the wall at the edge of one of the central towers to rest my beanbag-camera combination on! |

By the following evening, the crew had set up portable floodlights along the starboard side of the hull, and I could have got some pictures more like the ones I took last year of her sister ship HMS St Albans, but I didn't charge my batteries up or clear my memory cards, so realised that I probably wasn't going to be in a picture taking frame of mind and decided that these would be my definitive pictures from HMS Somerset's March 2006 visit to London. |
