Helen Stephenson's Leadenhall Street Pictures, November 3rd, 2006

I admire the autumn leaves in the Aviva Plaza every year. (Well, I probably won't this year, as my job has been relocated and I won't see them this year.) I took the camera up to The City with the aim of capturing the leaves, and of course I pointed it at a few other things nearby, too.

These pictures were captured using a Pentax *ist DS digital SLR camera.

I have long admired the autumn colours on the trees in the Aviva Plaza, particularly when the sun catches them, as it did here. I had to synchronise my lunch break with the sun to get these pictures, as the shadows cast by some of the nearby buildings block the light from these leaves quite early in the afternoon.

Here are some views towards the Aviva Building, shot through that lovely yellow autumn foliage. The curve of the Swiss Re Building (a.k.a. The Gherkin) is visible in the right of the picture on the left; and two of the three pictures show Tower 42 (the former Nat West Tower) leaning in from the left. Those two buildings are both taller than the Aviva Building, even though the camera angle gives the lie to this!

On the left, I've faced west, which puts the Aviva Building on the right of the picture, a building which is being demolished (as of July 2007) in the centre, Tower 42 between those two buildings, and the Lloyd's Building on the left.

On the right, I've returned after dark has fallen, in an attempt to catch the autumn leaves illiuminated by the street lights. I've had to work quite hard in PhotoShop to bring out the colour in the leaves. The Aviva Building is on the right, and Tower 42 is near the centre of the picture.

Here are three views of the Lloyd's Building, which really comes into its own after dark. The crane visible at the top left of the third picture is on the site of the new Willis Building, which was under construction at the time when these pictures were taken.

These pictures show what can be achieved without a tripod: the camera was attached to a beanbag, which was slapped against a convenient lamp post, and used to steady the camera.

Then I nipped around the corner into Gracechurch Street and found a convenient bollard to support my beanbag (and thus my camera) and took these pictures looking into Leadenhall Market. The people gathered on the cobblestones are customers of the New Moon pub, and they're enjoying a drink after their day's work in The City.
