Helen Stephenson's Putney Bridge and Fulham Palace Pictures, 10th June 2008

We made a trip to Fulham Palace to hear a bassoon recital by the promising young bassoonist Karen Geoghegan. Stephen told me that I couldn't take my Pentax K10D digital SLR camera with me, but he forgot that I upgraded my mobile phone recently to one with a camera in it...

These pictures were captured using a Samsung SGH-G800 cameraphone.

Our route to Fulham Palace took us via Waterloo, from where we took a train to Putney. We were in plenty of time, so we stopped in at the sign of the golden arches for a quick burger before making our way along Putney High Street to Putney Bridge.

As we neared Putney Bridge, I spotted a tower with a clock and a sundial on it which I couldn't possibly pass by without photographing, and so I utilised the only implement to hand, namely my cameraphone, which didn't do a bad job. I cropped in on the clock face and the sundial later, which was pushing it a bit, but you can make out the inscription "Time & Tide Stay for No Man" on the sundial.

I admired the local high-rise building, and also photographed it against the backdrop of Putney Bridge when I reached the other side of the Thames.

Once on the other side of the river, we descended some steps into the park and walked along the Thames Path until we came to Fulham Palace. We passed some lovely gardens along the way. This fountain had run dry, but was no less photogenic for that. I tried to get closer to it, but the cameraphone found the light on the lower bowl just too strong, so I cropped out the bit that it did properly. There are advantages to having five megapixels on a mobile phone!

We arrived at Fulham Palace, which is arranged around a courtyard. There was strong sunlight slanting across the courtyard and my attempts to photograph it prior to the start of the concert were only partially successful.

During the interval, when the light had moved around, I had a bit more success with my pictures.

I always like a fountain. Imagine what I could have done with this one if I'd had my full kit with me!

The clock tower showed to better advantage under the more sympathetic later light.

The bassoon recital was excellent, and if you get a chance to hear Karen Geoghegan play, do go along. She's frighteningly good, and what's more, I think that at the time when I was writing this in the summer of 2008 that she was still going to get even better!
