Helen Stephenson's Basildon Pictures, 1st May 2007

This page contains clickable images.

My employer, Xchanging, relocated my job to Basildon at the beginning of this year. It has been quite an adjustment for me to make to drive 32 miles to work instead of taking the train up to The City of London, and it has taken me a while to feel sufficiently at home to start taking pictures, but the view of the oilseed rape crops flowering this spring has inspired me. I took my camera in several times before I got a clear enough day for it to be worth taking pictures, and the crops were slightly past their best on the day I finally got good conditions, but these pictures will have to last me until next year, as those yellow flowers won't be hanging around any longer this year!

These pictures were captured using a Pentax *ist DS digital SLR camera.

As the yellow of the oilseed rape crops (known as canola in some parts of the World) were my inspiration, I'm starting off with two pictures of crops visible through the second floor north windows of our building.

If you look well below the horizon, you can see the garden centre on the opposite side of the A127 to our office. The crop in the left of the two pictures at the top of this page is visible near the horizon. I had to wait a while to get a picture of the A127 without any cars speeding along it. It's a busy road: one of the two major roads linking London with Southend. the other road is the A13, which is to the south of Basildon.

It is useful to me for there to be two major routes between Basildon and the M25 as it gives me some choices when there are traffic problems. I prefer the A127 as it is the more accessible route from the office, but the A13 is an excellent backup route.

If you look almost as far north as possible through the east windows of the office, you catch a glimpse of Maggit's Lake, where there is a well-stocked fishing lake.

If you look in a south easterly direction, you can see the tractor plant. There is rack upon rack of tractor wheels stacked up in the yard which is visible from the office.

Now that I've "broken my duck" and taken some pictures near my new workplace, I hope to follow up with some more pictures every so often.
